The Institute for Conflict Research is an independent not-for-profit organisation with charitable status. ICR is managed by a Board of Directors drawn from the statutory, voluntary community and academic sectors.

ICR has been based in North Belfast since 1996, when the Cost of the Troubles project was established. The name Institute for Conflict Research was adopted in 2001 to reflect the increasingly diverse scale of the organisation and its work.

The Institute for Conflict Research previously operated under the names of Community Conflict Impact on Children (1999-2001), The Cost of the Troubles Study (1996-99) and Templegrove Action Research (1994-96), and as such conducted a number of significant pieces of research and produced a range of books, reports and other publications.
